Your 7 Day Itinerary for Lewes, Delaware: A Full Week, Actually Planned

Most beach itineraries for the Delaware coast cover two or three days, which tells you something: they’re written for people squeezing the beach into a weekend. This 7-day itinerary Lewes Delaware is different, built for a full week, because that’s how this area actually works best. The festivals, the wineries, the golf, the slow mornings, none of it fits in 48 hours.

One thing this itinerary does that others don’t: seasonal swaps. The Delaware coast isn’t a summer-only destination, there are jazz festivals in fall, holiday lights and parades in December, and tax-free shopping year round. Where a day changes depending on when you visit, you’ll see a swap note. Use the version that matches your week.

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary in Lewes

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

Don’t plan anything big for arrival day, that’s rule one of a week-long stay. Get in, unpack properly (you’re here for seven nights, actually use the closet), and get your bearings.

In the evening, take the ten minute drive into downtown Lewes. Walk Second Street, watch the boats come through the canal at Canalfront Park, and have your first dinner somewhere easy, Striper Bites is a reliable first-night pick for seafood without a wait for a table most nights. Then back to the condo for the first balcony evening. You’ll have six more, that’s the whole point.

Day 2: Lewes Proper

Morning: coffee and breakfast at The Station on Kings, part cafe, part garden shop, and a good slow start. Then walk the historic district, Lewes calls itself the first town in the first state and it’s earned the museums to back it up, the Zwaanendael Museum, the Lewes Historical Society complex, and the Lightship Overfalls are all worth an hour. The Cannonball House still has a British cannonball from 1813 lodged in its foundation.

Afternoon: : Lewes Beach on the bay side, calm water, easy parking, good for a first beach day without committing to the ocean surf. Evening: dinner on Second Street, then ice cream at Kings Homemade Ice Cream, a Lewes institution.

Seasonal swap, December: Seasonal swap, December: trade the beach afternoon for the Lewes Christmas Parade and Lewes Lights, the town’s self-guided holiday light tour that runs all month. Downtown Lewes in December is genuinely one of the best versions of it.

Day 3: Cape Henlopen State Park

Give the whole day to Cape Henlopen State Park. Ocean beaches, the WWII observation towers, Fort Miles, and the bike trails through the dunes. Rent bikes or bring your own, Lewes Cycle Sports and Seagreen Bicycle both rent locally, and the Junction and Breakwater Trail between Lewes and Rehoboth is flat, shaded, and worth the morning on its own.

Pack lunch or head back into Lewes for it, then return for the late afternoon at the Point, where the bay meets the Atlantic, for the best view on the coast.

Day 4: Rehoboth Beach Day

Do the classic boardwalk day. Thrasher’s fries, Funland if you’ve got kids (it’s been running since 1962), the shops on Rehoboth Avenue, and the beach itself. Go early, leave when it gets crowded, that’s the week long stay advantage, you’re not cramming it all in.

Evening: Rehoboth’s restaurant scene is the best on the coast. Book somewhere proper tonight, Blue Moon, Salt Air, and Chesapeake & Maine are all solid picks if you want a starting point.

Seasonal swap, late October: this is Sea Witch Festival weekend, Rehoboth’s biggest event of the year, costumes, a parade, the whole town out. If your week lands on it, this replaces the regular beach day entirely.

Seasonal swap, October (Jazz Festival): the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival runs multiple days across venues in Rehoboth and Lewes. Check the schedule and build this day around a show.

Day 5: The Unplanned Day

Schedule nothing. This is the day weekend trips never get. Sleep in, make breakfast slowly, read on the balcony, walk down to the pool. If the weather’s perfect, it’s a bonus beach day. If it rains, downtown Lewes has bookshops and galleries, and nobody’s rushing you.

This day is also your flex slot, if a festival, a charter, or a restaurant reservation didn’t fit elsewhere in the week, it lands here.

Day 6: Wine, Golf, or Water

Pick your version of a treat-yourself day:

Wine: Nassau Valley Vineyards is Delaware’s first winery, ten minutes from the condo, with daily tastings. Salted Vines in nearby Frankford and Twin Branch Winery are both good alternatives if you’ve been to Nassau before or just want to make a real afternoon of it.

Golf: Kings Creek Country Club and Rehoboth Beach Country Club are the area’s classic courses, with American Classic Golf Club as the easygoing public option.

Water: kayak or paddleboard on Love Creek, right off the condo’s doorstep, or book a fishing charter out of Lewes. In season, the full moon kayak tours through the marshes are the sleeper hit of the whole area, and a few outfitters run dolphin watching or sunset cruises out of Lewes if you’d rather let someone else drive the boat.

Things to do in Lewes for a week, dock near the Cape May-Lewes Ferry

Evening: this is the night for the Cape May-Lewes Ferry sunset crossing if the season’s right, 85 minutes across the bay, and you can do it as a foot passenger just for the ride.

Day 7: Shopping and the Slow Goodbye

Delaware has no sales tax, and the Tanger Outlets, over 130 stores, are minutes away. Whatever you’d buy at home, it’s cheaper here, and around the holidays this alone is worth the trip for a lot of guests.

Spend the morning at the outlets or the downtown Lewes boutiques, then take the afternoon for one last beach walk or balcony hour. Pack tonight, not tomorrow morning, trust us.

Seasonal swap, December: holiday shopping, tax free, at the outlets is the headline event, budget the full morning for it.

Where to Stay for All Seven Nights

An itinerary like this only works if your base is set up for a week. That means a real kitchen, in-unit laundry, space to spread out, and somewhere quiet to come back to every evening, because over seven nights, you’ll spend more evenings at home than you expect.

That’s our luxury waterview condo on Rehoboth Bay: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a balcony over Love Creek, a pool, and a gated community that stays quiet because it books weekly stays only, 7 night minimum. Every day of this itinerary starts and ends there, ten to fifteen minutes from everything above.

If you’re still deciding whether a full week is right for you, we wrote about that too: week long beach vacation in Delaware.

Quick Answers

No, and this itinerary is the proof. Between the beaches, Cape Henlopen, Rehoboth, the wineries, golf, and seasonal festivals, a week fills up without repeating a day, and still leaves room for a do-nothing day, which is kind of the point.

It works year round, that’s why the seasonal swaps are built in. Summer is classic beach weather, fall brings the Jazz Festival and Sea Witch Festival, and December has the holiday parades, lights, and tax-free shopping season.

Yes, realistically. Downtown Lewes and Lewes Beach are walkable or bikeable from most of the area, but Rehoboth, Cape Henlopen’s far corners, the wineries, and the golf courses all want a car.

Yes, Delaware has no sales tax on purchases, which is why the Tanger Outlets are a destination in their own right, especially around the holidays.
