Lewes Beach, Delaware: A Complete Visitor Guide
Lewes Beach stretches from Roosevelt Inlet to the Cape May–Lewes Ferry Terminal, right where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic. It’s a quieter, more local alternative to the boardwalk beaches further south , here’s what to know before you go, plus a nearby vacation rental if you’re staying for the week.
Parking at Lewes Beach
Lewes runs metered parking at both Beach #1 and Beach #2 from May 1 through September 30, 9 AM–8 PM, at $3/hour with an 11-hour maximum stay. Meters take quarters, credit cards, or the ParkMobile app (card and app payments carry a small fee). Beach access is closed midnight to 6 AM, and public restrooms at Beach #1 and #2 are open 7 AM–dusk, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Calm-Water Activities
Because Lewes Beach fronts the Delaware Bay rather than the open Atlantic, the water here tends to be calmer than the ocean beaches further south — a good fit for families with young kids or anyone who’d rather wade than fight surf. A few local rules to know: no alcohol, no open fires, personal watercraft must stay 300 feet from shore, and dogs aren’t permitted on the beach 8 AM–6:30 PM during the May 1–September 30 season.
